The "Phineas Fogg" Contest (or: Who has the longest commute?)

2

Commuting is a daily ritual for many Metronauts, so I thought it might be fun to have a little contest to answer this question: Who has the longest commute? A couple of years ago, the auto repair shop Midas held a contest called "America's Longest Commute", in which a prize was offered to the American who had to travel the greatest distance to work. The winner was an engineer in California who lived in Mariposa and worked in San Jose, making for a commute of 186 miles (300 km) each way (here's a map showing one route for this commute). According to this article, he's had this commute since 1989, a ritual which requires him to leaves home at 4:30 a.m. and has him return sometime between 8 and 8:30. His total travel time to and from work is about 7 hours, a stretch made bearable by 9 cups of coffee, satellite radio and audiobooks. It would be interesting to see who among us has the longest commute. For the purposes of this contest, I think we can have two winners: one for the longest commute distance and one for the longest commute time. For the purposes of this contest, I'll define "commute" as any regular trip that you have to make at least 3 times a week for at least 9 months out of the year. It can be for any reason, whether work, school, family obligation and so on. In order to win the contest, you'll have to supply some kind of proof of your commute (perhaps your driver's license for your home address and a business card for your work address). The winners of the contest will receive a stylish Metronauts T-shirt. So if you've got a long commute, tell us about it in the comments! Tell us how long it takes and how far it is (you can use Google Maps to find approximate distances between places). You can also go into detail: How long have you been doing this commute? Do you listen to music, read a book or sleep during your commute? What is it that makes such a long daily trip worthwhile? Let us know!

If I'm really going to be efficient, it's subway from High Park to Royal York, 76 Royal York South to Mimico, GO train from Mimico to Oakville station, and the Oakville 20 bus from the GO to Sheridan. If I leave my front door at 12:20, I get to work 1:35 - provided everything works out.

The delay's mostly when things don't. I tried getting to an event at University of Toronto Mississauga last week, and ended up stuck at Royal York on a bus that was apparently on break for a bit, causing me to miss the train. If I'm really needing to get the train, I'll backtrack to Union - it's not much longer of a trip time wise, strange enough. Was rather stuck on that one in this case, and ended up not going.

My brother's commute is about as long, but more annoying. Pape to Kipling, then the 112C north to just off the airport. Same time, shorter distance, but feels longer for some reason.

The longest I've witnessed was when taking an overnight bus into NYC from Ithaca, NY. The bus stopped about 150 miles out, where a few people living in the far ranges of exurbia was commuting into work. Talked to one guy for a bit. A similar trek - 4:30am to 8ish, depending on tunnel traffic,, and only a couple of options for returning. If you miss those buses for whatever reason, sleep in your cube - save that he'd done that one too many times, and he was just about to talk to his boss about office policies on that front.

Needless to say, he wasn't all that impressed to hear that I was taking the bus to NYC to get to JFK and head to Cancun for a conference. I think I heard him die a bit inside.

Maybe this doesn't count because I don't do it anymore (that gig ended last May!) but I'll put it in here for comparison's sake. I lived by Trinity Bellwoods and traveled to Hwy 7 and Warden Avenue in Markham for, oh, almost 5 days a week for 5 months. Before that I had been going from College and Yonge for a year, so more or less the same affair without the streetcar.

My route:

- Queen Streetcar to Osgoode Station (10-15 min depending on volume)
- Osgoode heading southbound until it swung back North to go all the way to Finch. 30-35 min.
- York Regional Transit bus(es) - If I was early, I could get the Express direct bus. If I was late, I would take a Viva Pink, or if I was too late for even *that*, the Viva Purple and Blue.

Best case scenario: 70 minutes. Worst case scenario: I think I had to have it go an hour forty five. By that point, it was probably when I was going home and decided to walk home rather than wait for the Queen Streetcar.

Good times. And I can say that, of course, because they're over.

The trip home is reversed except taking the subway home

Roughly an hr each way

I learned along time ago to budge extra time in case of delays
